Directors' Notes

February 7, 2000

The monthly meeting of DACS' Board of Directors was held at the Resource Center on February 7, 2000. Present were Messrs. Bovaird, Buoy, Cohen, David, Ostergren and Setaro and Mrs. Gaberel, and Mrs. Owles. Chairman Wally David presided and Secretary Larry Buoy kept the records of the meeting. The minutes of the meeting held January 10, 2000 were approved.

Finance & membership

Treasurer Charles Bovaird announced that he had modified his accounting procedures to include prepaid, unexpired membership dues as a liability on the balance sheet and reported current cash and bank accounts of $18,087.34 with prepaid dues of $6,844.00, leaving net assets exclusive of depreciable equipment at $11, 243,34. He also reported that current membership stood at 564.

RC lease renewal

President Ostergren reported on the ongoing negotiations with the City of Danbury regarding renewal of the lease of the Resource Center, and said that as of this date an apparent misunderstanding exists regarding terms of such renewal between City agencies.

Membership nonrenewals

Larry Buoy reported on his efforts to contact former members to try to establish a pattern or identifiable reason for their dropping membership. Of the limited number of contacts made, the one prevailing complaint was the late delivery of the newsletter. In a surprising number of cases, these people said they would be willing to rejoin as dacs.doc online and electronic-only members. It was agreed that the most effective response to these individuals would be to direct mail them a membership form. Also discussed was the possibility of advancing the mailing date of the newsletter. No practical solution was agreed upon.

Student membership

Also discussed was the possibility of having DACS advocates visit computer-oriented classes in evening, adult, or continuing education courses at area schools to encourage membership among students. Larry Buoy, Wally David, and Marlene Gaberel agreed to form an ad hoc committee to organize this.

AMD Athlon gift

Jeff Setaro displayed the Athlon CPU donated to DACS by Advanced Micro Devices in recognition of our hosting their presentation at the February General Meeting. He asked for suggestions about how the chip could be used to gain goodwill recognition for AMD and DACS. Comments made included its possible use in the Resource Center's computer or as the seed for a new computer system for a charitable agency.

Advertising

President Ostergren remarked on the necessity of acquiring additional advertising for the newsletter. Various solutions were proposed, including enlisting the services of an ad sales rep and the further use of the cooperative advertising arrangement offered through APCUG, both of which are to be investigated.

A true record.
