WinAmp

Converts Your Music Files

By April Miller Cripliver

HERE’S A PROGRAM you can use to convert all those MP3 files to .WAV files. In the instructions below, RMC = Right Mouse Click, and DC = Double-click.

1. Create a “work folder” to place your MP3 and WAV files into. Something like “TmpForCD” on your Desktop will do. You’ll need this folder in Steps 8 and 11 below.

2. Download an MP3 (like from Napster) to your work folder.

3. Start WinAmp. RMC on the face of your WinAmp, choose Options, then choose Preferences.

4. Click on the Input link under Plug-ins, as shown below:

5. Find and DC the “Nullsoft MPEG audio decoder plug-in v2.28 (x86) (IN_MP3.DLL)”

6. This box will pop up:

7. On the General tab, make sure the Layer I, II, and III boxes are all checked.

8. On the Streaming tab, turn on the box “Save files to:” and navigate to your Working folder you made in Step #1. Click OK to close the MPEG audio decoder settings box.

9. Click on Output from the Plug-ins list. DC on “Nullsoft Disk Writer plug-in v1.0 (x86) (out_disk.dll)” as shown below:

10. When you DC, the following window pops up:

11. Navigate to the folder you made in Step #1. Say OK, then CLOSE out of the WinAmp Preferences box.

12. RMC on the face of your WinAmp again. Choose Play„ File…

13. DC the MP3 you want converted. WinAmp will “play” the song silently and quickly, converting it to WAV. Your work folder will now have TWO copies of that file: one is the original MP3 and the other is the WAV.

14. Exit WinAmp.

15. You’re now ready to “burn” the WAV file onto a CD-R disc.

WARNING! Don’t forget to change your WinAmp in Step #9 back to “Nullsoft waveOut plug-in v2.02 (x86) (out_wave.dll)” or you’ll be converting every song you play in WinAmp!! Since WAV files are absolutely HUGE, you’ll fill your hard drive up in no time!!
