President's Message

November 2000

It is said that Xerox, whose technology is etched into the PC interface, never imagined any future for computers beyond business. Yet only a year ago, AC Nielsen announced that a third of PC households already owned more than one computer, and that sixty percent of new buyers were adding a PC to what they already owned. Families facing fracture over who gets to use the PC are following the path of least resistance–more PCs. Clearly, the personal computer is already going where the portable radio, the cable splitter and the three-car garage have gone before.

This LAN was made for you and me

With more and more PCs in use, families are increasingly turning to another technology previously reserved to business - the local area network. At our next meeting on November 8, DACS seer and Random Access moderator, Bruce Preston, will show us how to set up and maintain a home based LAN. No techno twaddle–just plain talk and hands-on instruction on how to run the wire, make the connections, and set up the software to wire up your home.

Wanted - A few good nerds

It's election time again . . . No, not the one for president, but the election of the DACS Board of Directors. Directors serve for two-year terms, and each year half must run for re-nomination at the annual meeting in December. This time we have two vacancies, so if you'd like to get involved, it's a good opportunity to throw your hat in the ring. You don't have to be a guru or a long-time member of DACS; our only requirement is that you be willing to roll up your sleeves and get down to work. If that suits you, contact our nominations chair, Jeff Setaro, at jasetaro@sprynet.com or see any DACS officer or board member at the monthly meeting.

About those vacancies: Wally David has moved with his family to the Jersey shore and is setting up camp in new facilities of his employer, Cyberian Outpost. The only user group in driving distance is eighty strong, but expect big things from it in the future. Wally has served as DACS director for about five years and as chairman for two. A prolific contributor to dacs.doc, he is known by presenters for his reputation for terrorism by review. We will especially miss Wally's characteristic splish splash through the eddies and currents of the Internet in his signature program at DACS meetings, Surfing Safari.

Also leaving the board will be Ed Heere, a co-founder of DACS, a director for eight years and chairman for two. Ed is freeing up time for his business, AMSYS Computer, and will continue to be involved in DACS as an officer and volunteer. We owe so much to Ed for the good works he has done for DACS, that it would be impossible even to begin listing them here.

A Mac tribute

It has been eight years since DACS merged with the Macintosh User Group of Greater Danbury (MUGGD) I was therefore saddened to learn recently that the Mac SIG will cease operations. Faced with declining participation and the loss of co-founder and active member, Jim Menousek, to cancer in October, SIG members chose to curtail their meetings, but remain networked as individuals.
We have always welcomed the involvement of Mac users in our organization, and hope their SIG can be reborn and reinvigorated in the future. In the meantime, we will continue to actively seek editorial content on Apple topics in the Macinations section of dacs.doc (see Mike Kaltschnee's piece on the Mac OS in this issue).
