Directors' Notes

August 13, 2001

A regular Meeting of the Board of Directors of DACS was held at the Resource Center on August 13, 2001. Present were Messrs. Bovaird, Buoy, Neary, Ostergren, Pearson and Setaro. The minutes of the last meeting held on July 9 were approved with minor correction.

Treasurer Charles Bovaird reported combined CDs, checking and postal accounts of $20,950.15, plus postage on hand of $91.00, a total of $21,041.15, less prepaid dues of $8,314.00 for a net of $12,727.15. He also reported current membership at 468.

Mr. Bovaird also reported on the cost of mass mailings with some conflicting information from the Postal Service. This was followed by a discussion of statistics regarding dropouts from membership and the effects of efforts to regain same. Possible ways were explored to encourage membership applications from visitors at the General Meetings.

President Ostergren stated that he would ask Matt Greger to determine if there would be interest in a small business SIG. Further to the subject of bulk or saturation mailings, it was the consensus that media advertising would be the more productive method of contacting potential new membership and that such be further investigated. This month’s General Meeting devoted to the Macintosh and its new OS X operating system also led to a discussion of renewing efforts to include the Macintosh user community within DACS.

Don Neary discussed an e-mail received from Peter Hess, Chair of the Marketing Committee of APCUG, encouraging member groups to write letters of protest to key personnel of Adobe Systems Incorporated regarding the assumed changes in Adobe’s user group relations, viz: generous support via advertising, donations of group-business software and presentations. It was the consensus that any changes in Adobe’s attitude toward user groups were yet to be demonstrated, the sending of such letters could be deemed premature.

Don also informed the Board of his efforts to update the list of Internet service providers included in dacs.doc, some of which were obsolete. Inclusion of New York State local providers was suggested and the deletion of obsolete, merged or absorbed providers.

A true record.

ATTEST:

Lawrence Buoy
Secretary
