Directors' Notes

September 8, 2003

A Regular Meeting of your Board of Directors was held at the Resource Center on Monday, September 8, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. Present were Messrs. Bovaird, Buoy, Keane, Ostergren, Scheef and Setaro. President Jim Scheef presided and Secretary Larry Buoy kept the record. Minutes of the last meeting of the Board held September 8, 2003, were approved as presented.

Treasurer Charlie Bovaird reported current cash assets of $16,721.58, consisting of bank and postal accounts in the amount of $16,854.23, plus postage on hand of $132.65. Subtracting liabilities of prepaid dues in the amount of $7,214.58 left a net of $9,507.00. Charlie also reported current membership of 422.

Review of General Meeting presentations scheduled or hoped for resulted in the following lineup: October - PowerQuest (PartitionMagic/Drive Image); November - Microsoft (Office 2003); December - John Patrick; January - Intuit; February - Hacking Tools; and March - Snap Video. For one of the foregoing tentative January or February subjects, a program of members’ “Favorite Shareware” may be substituted. (Your Board of Directors would welcome any suggestions re: potential resentations from within or without the DACS membership.)

It was announced that Gene Minasi had notified us that the first tuesday of June, 2004, has been reserved by the hospital for a Medical Town Meeting and that the DACS meeting had been rescheduled for the second Tuesday, June 8.

Jim Scheef expressed frustration in trying to find appropriate sites for posters for General Meetings. Jim also touched on the subject of possible donations of computers from Casey Family Services, with the unresolved problems of where they could be stored while in refurbishing and licensing of an operating system to be installed thereon. He also stated that he intended to ask Casey if they could be “filtered.” Jim also asked Jeff Setaro if he could contact the Microsoft “Mindshare” site and associate all our Microsoft-oriented SIGS with the DACS registration.

Charlie Bovaird reported that, in the limited time since publication, there had been a light response to the member survey contained in the September issue of the newsletter.

Jim Scheef broached the subject of possible recruitment of members via distribution of the DACS newsletter to area businesses through their Information Technology departments. It was the consensus that without specific contacts within individual companies, such mailings would not attract much attention. Allan Ostergren suggested accessing the Chamber of Commerce membership list as a method of filtering out possible interested businesses.

Allan Ostergren declared that he had run somewhat dry of clip art usable for the front cover of the newsletter, but had discovered a source (clipart.com) which, though more expensive, offered well over a million selections. The amount involved being well within a discretionary expenditure, he was advised to give such source a try.
