Directors' Notes

June 13, 2005

A regular meeting of your Board of Directors was held at the Resource Center on Monday, June 13, 2005. Present were Messrs. Bovaird, Corzo, Gallichotte, Keane, Preston, Setaro and Yates. Also present were Larry Buoy, Lisa Leifels and Allan Ostergren. President Jeff Setaro presided and Secretary Lisa Leifels kept the record. Minutes of the last meeting held on May 9, 2005 were approved.

Treasurer Charles Bovaird reported current cash assets of $15,194.67, consisting of total bank and postal accounts in the amount of $15,135.15 plus postage on hand of $59.52. Subtracting a liability of prepaid dues in the amount of $6,656.00 left a net equity of $8,538.67. He also reported that the current membership is at 359, 53 of which are electronic.

The confirmed General Meeting topics for the remaining months in 2005 are: for July 5, Secure Computing in the Internet Age; for October 4, Organizing your Hard Drive by Gene Barlow; for November 1, Microsoft; for December 6, The Future of the Internet by John Patrick.

Richard Corzo has contacted Dave Marra who does user group presentations on Apple related subjects about speaking at a future general meeting. He first heard his name because he did a presentation for the BizMac user group in Norwalk. A discussion ensued regarding the news that Apple will be switching from IBM’s PowerPC processor to Intel’s chip.

Jamie Yates wanted to firm up the topics for the Special Interest Groups presentation. Jamie offered to make all the contacts once the list of SIGS is determined. Jeff Setaro thought it would be good to hear from the Web Design SIG about how the redesign of the web site is going. Also it would be interesting to hear from the Macintosh SIG, the Digital Imaging SIG and either the VB or Access SIG.
A discussion of possible future presentations began with Jeff Setaro saying that he was going to talk to Scott Ward over at Stony Hill Golf on how technology can be used to improve your golf swing.
Allan Ostergren mentioned the idea of getting in touch with other user groups in the area to do an exchange of speakers.

Jamie Yates thought Parker Moreland spent a lot of time preparing for his Astronomy presentation and it was agreed that it was a success. Allan Ostergren said that he would include the dates for the upcoming New Milford Adult Education course on Astronomy in the fall newsletter.
A discussion of possible topics for the Shareware Meeting resulted with Jamie Yates talking about Roboform, a password manager program. Marc Cohen may speak about Sun Clock, a screen saver program that gives you sunrise and sunset times across different time zones. Bill Keane thought Linux Knoppix would be a good topic because it allows you to try using Linux for free without removing Windows. Allan Ostergren requested that Bruce Preston do a presentation on moving audio from LP’s or tape to a PC where editing can be done prior to burning to a CD.
Jeff Setaro said he thought we should trade in the current UPS in the Resource Center for a larger capacity UPS that can be used for 3 or 4 PC’s.

Jeff Setaro recommended that we should get the opinion of council to review the current DACS Bylaws. Larry Buoy said he thought it would be good to have Bylaws that are written simpler and could be understood by a layman. Jeff said he would make an electronic file of the current Bylaws available to the board.

Jim Scheef sent an email to Jeff Setaro to say that the AntiVirus software on the server in the Resource Center is expiring. Jim said we can get a 5 user license of Symantec AntiVirus for $140. Jeff said we can get a 10 user corporate license of F-Prot for $50. A motion was made to purchase the F-Prot AntiVirus Software.

Richard Corzo inquired if someone was planning to paint the wall in the Resource Center white so that the colors on the projector don’t get dimmed. Jeff Setaro asked if we looked into getting a projector screen. The consensus was that purchasing a projector screen would be a better solution.
