President's Message

May, 2007
Rob Limbaugh - President

Time has certainly flown by rather quickly for me, but that's probably more due to the schedule I've kept than anything else.  It's only fitting, I guess, that I happen to be writing this while on a train to New York City to visit a couple of the offices I support.

Thanks, Jay!

Jay Ferron’s presentation of Vista was phenomenal!  It was nice to see the overview tour of features and hear the candid opinions he had.  I especially liked the fact that he took the time to speak about the parental control features added and the reporting they provide.

Show your pride on the outside!

If you haven't taken a look at the DACS Gear lately, there are some new offerings and a slick new styling.  These are a great way to show pride in our great organization.  For those who aren't aware, each item purchased donates about a dollar to DACS treasury, so this is a good supplemental fundraiser for our organization.

At the Core

The deployment of a core infrastructure is going well.  During the Server SIG meeting on April 12th we updated everyone on the pieces on which Jim and I have been working.  The goal for June is to have our new e-mail services and shared operations repository in full operation. We are well on track and have lots of room to address any issues that crop up.

After the SIG, Jim and I discussed how many of the next phases of deployment and tuning would lend well to SIG participation or for small workshops.  Please stay tuned for announcements for more information.  Many of the upcoming tasks are relevant to real-world network configuration planning, such as alerting, remote management, backups, and recovery related tasks.

Have a General Meeting Idea?

Jamie Yates has done an awesome job during his term as VP of Programs.  He continues to lend his expertise as things transition to Chris Novell, our new VP of Programs.

While we move toward the second half of 2007, Chris is exploring some new General Meeting ideas and topics.  We know there HAS GOT to be some areas of interest the membership would like to explore on which we haven't yet put our finger.  If there's a technology-based topic that you would like to see presented at a future General Meeting, please contact Chris Novell.

EXTRA!  EXTRA!

Every month, your trusty DACS Editors pipe up with the scariest of all emails:  the submission deadline reminder!  Patrick Libert has been doing an awesome job as our new Editor and he deserves a huge “THANKS!” for keeping the rest of us on track.  THANKS, PATRICK!

DACS encourages anyone who'd like to submit an article, review, how-to, or anything of interest, to feel free to send it in.  The editing team does a fabulous job of smoothing out the rough spots, so don't let skill be a limiting factor. The deadline for submissions for each month is posted on the DACS Calendar (http://www.dacs.org/meetings/calendar.htm).

In closing…

For the moment, I think that covers all I needed to say this time around.  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

See you at the next meeting!
