From the Editor:
What’s Up DACS

by Patrick Libert

Hail to the Chief!

Our annual election of officers occurred at the March Board Meeting. Please join me in welcoming our new President, Richard Corzo. Richard has been an integral part of DACS’ continued success for many years and many know him from his tireless devotion as the leader of the Mac SIG.

Richard succeeds Rob Limbaugh who has been presiding for three years. Rob has done wonders to modernize DACS’ operations to bring the group into the twenty-first century. Rob spent countless hours choosing program speakers, reorganizing the resource center, and keeping DACS in the public eye as a viable organization. We will miss Rob’s leadership.

Program Preview

Many, if not most of us, began using Microsoft Word and Excel as soon as they were released. In my case, this was in 1987 with my first computer, a Dell desktop for my new office. At that time, I preferred WordPerfect which worked flawlessly.

When I switched to Macs in 1992, the office had been set up to use Word and Excel and I stayed with those applications until three to four years ago. The cost of the Microsoft upgrades at that time led me to look for alternative software.

I have alternated between using open source software such as NeoOffice (Mac) and, more recently, Apple’s contribution to the Office suite, iWork. There are several other excellent alternatives that will be discussed and demonstrated at the next General Meeting on Tuesday, April 6.

New and Notable

My continuous search for streaming radio sites has found another candidate, thanks to a reader feedback in the March 2010 issue of Macworld Magazine.

Slacker Personal Radio is similar to Pandora. According to the Macworld reader, it offers a better music selection for his listening tastes. I created a couple of different “stations” and will try a few more before passing judgement.

The major differences are that it allows only seven days of free listening before one has to subscribe to one of two plans:

  • $4.99 per month billed monthly, or
  • $3.99 per month billed annually as $47.88.

Comparatively, Pandora allows free listening with audio and banner ads or no ads for $36 billed annually

.More on this topic next month!
