By Richard DiFranco,

The first article I wrote for DACS.doc was a description of online banking. It was back in 1991 and I was working for a help desk for NationsBank. To do what we called online banking then you needed a PC and a dial up modem. If you had an account you dialed the bank through the resident software and connected. The bank would send e-mail and the software would upload your transactions and the bank would download your statements. All told you would be connected to the bank for about thirty seconds. Things have changed a great deal in fifteen years.

At the June general meeting, DACS is continuing its series on computer security with a presentation by Frank Kunst and Chris Milmerstadt from Fairfield County Bank. They will show us, from a banking perspective, how accounts can be hijacked and compromised. They will go over some best practices for passwords, e-mail, social networks, shopping on line and online banking. How is the banking industry protecting itself and its customers? What are the credit cards companies doing to prevent fraud? How can you keep your accounts safe?

The Internet has become a major part of our lives and will only get bigger and more pervasive. E-commerce will become more the norm. Dishonest people will always be with us. We must find ways of catching up or staying ahead of them.
