By Lisa Leifels

With all of the recent buzz in the press lately about Apple’s new iPad you may be thinking about either purchasing a new tablet for the first time or possibly even upgrading to a newer tablet device.  Perhaps you already have a tablet, but haven’t quite figured out how to use it yet.  Tablet computers have finally worked their way into the mainstream for people who want a device that’s as convenient to use as a smartphone with a screen size that’s a little closer to a laptop.  Whether or not you’re a complete novice or a power user there’s a good chance you will walk away with some new knowledge after attending the presentation on tablets given by Mike Kaltschnee and David Wilkinson on Tuesday, April 3rd.

Mike Kaltschnee is a long time DACS member that you may remember from the presentation he gave last October on Streaming Video.  He also taught us all we needed to know about blogging way back in 2005 during another DACS presentation. Mike was very generous with sharing what he learned from creating the very popular Hacking Netflix blog (hackingnetflix.com), which was started back in November 2003 and has grown to over 250,000 readers during the past 8 years.

David Wilkinson is President of Efficient Solutions (effisols.com), a company that provides portfolio optimization, asset allocation and retirement software.   He is a Microsoft MVP in C++ and previously worked at Schlumberger-Doll Research in Ridgefield.  David will be showing us all of the distinguishing features of the Windows tablet.

Together Mike and David will be teaming up to bring us up to date on the different uses of tablets such as an e-book reader, playing games, learning something new and even doing some light work. They will be sharing their favorite apps for both adults and for kids.  We will be educated on cloud storage and learn what should be taken into consideration when selecting a tablet.  Here are some questions that will be answered during the meeting;   Apple, Android, Microsoft and HP all offer different operating systems to use, which one will best meet your needs?  Can a tablet replace a notebook? What’s the difference between an e-book readers and a tablet?  What is the best way to view a PDF file on a tablet?  Do you need a stylus?

You may have a question of your own that you would like to get answered by our two knowledgeable speakers, which is another reason you certainly don’t want to miss this presentation.  If you have a tablet, then please bring it to the meeting so that you can share your favorite apps with two people who are very passionate about technology as well as with the rest of the DACS membership after the presentation.
