Mobile Devices and Windows 8 SIG

By Jim Scheef

We have started a review of each special interest group (SIG) at the general meetings. The SIGs are the best part of DACS, yet many DACS members have never attended a SIG meeting. The intent is to familiarize those attending the general meetings with a SIG they might find interesting.

This month’s SIG began as the Mobile Devices SIG, which covered all manner of hand-held devices from smart phones and e-book readers to tablets. In a grand gesture of egalitarianism, we covered both Apple and Android devices. Later we added Windows 8, since the user interface, if not the actual operating system, appeared on these same small touch-screen devices as well as on traditional full notebook and desktop computers, and the touch-screen interface is a primary feature.

The SIG meets on the fourth Monday of each month in the DACS Resource Center (http://dacs.org/sigroups/directions.htm).
Each month we have a prepared topic to present, while allowing time for questions from members. Over the months, the prepared topics have ranged from how to manage pictures and music on your mobile device, to installing and using apps, and to tips and tricks. With Win 8 we have discussed how to do things we take for granted on earlier versions of Windows, but which seem hard (or impossible) to do on Win 8. Another topic has been the differences between Modern apps and the equivalent traditional Windows applications. This is a very interactive group, where questions are the whole point. Be sure to bring your mobile devices when you come, or just come and ask questions about what to buy.
