Directors' Notes

August 9, 1999

The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors was held at the Resource Center on August 9, 1999. Present were Messrs. Bovaird, Buoy, Cohen, David, Ostergren, Preston, Setaro, and Mrs. Gaberel. Chairman David presided. Secretary Buoy kept the records of the meeting. The minutes of the July meeting were approved.

Finance & membership

Treasurer Charles Bovaird reported combined checking and postal balances of $15,970.43 and postage on hand of $100.31, for a total of $16,070.74 with no outstanding obligations. Current membership stands at 554. In response to questions from newer members of the Board, Mr. Bovaird briefly reviewed the efforts of Jim Ragsdale in keeping accurate membership records.

Resource center equipment

In the absence of Ed Heere, discussions about the acquisition of additional or replacement software for the principal computer at the Resource Center, as well as potential usage of the video recording of the last Y2K Symposium, were tabled.

Environmental efforts

President Ostergren introduced Mr. Robert Palmer of the Housatonic Resource Recovery Authority (HRRA), who outlined that agency’s plans to host, as part of an American Recycling Day, a fair on the Green in Danbury in October. In addition to educational and entertainment events, there will be a focus on the salvage of precious metals incorporated into computer equipment and TVs, and the proper disposal of potentially toxic waste materials, especially from TVs and computer monitors. As an adjunct to this, the HRRA wants to promote the recycling of used computer equipment that has potential usefulness to disadvantaged children in the region and state and has conferred with Computers 4 Kids personnel to this effect.

Mr. Palmer’s then asked for and received suggestions for criteria separating useful computer components from useless ones, and asked for volunteers to aid in that process, stating that it was planned that “junk” would be transported directly from the fair to the Global Recycling plant in Massachusetts. It was suggested that he prepare a plea for such volunteers for presentation at the next General Meeting, including help in publicity, finding donors, stripping of hard drives, etc.

Publication awards

President Ostergren presented actual certificates received from APCUG for the 1999 awards given DACS at the recent InterGalactic User Group Officers Conference in these categories for newsletters: Best Design, Runner Up; Feature Articles, Runner Up; Medium (size) Newsletter, Best; User Group Coverage, Best. Discussed were various areas in which the newsletter might be improved.

Stories for News-Times

After discussing the proposed arrangements with the News-Times for providing material from dacs.doc other than excerpts from the Random Access column, it was agreed that articles or other materials originating within DACS membership be selected only with the permission of the writers, and with restrictions and full acknowledgment of authorship and the DACS source accompanying the story. It was also agreed that the effort to obtain publication of DACS material in other regional newspapers be deferred until the News-Times program can be evaluated.

A true record.
